Integrating Science and Adaptive Land Management

Widespread habitat deterioration due to fire and invasive species in the Great Basin have created a need for coordination across land agencies and between science and management activities in the Great Basin. The coordination is needed across agencies, universities, and NGOs to reduce redundancy, increase complementarity, and leverage resources. I serve on a special USGS appointment as scientist to the Great Basin Landscape Conservation Cooperative, assisting with science prioritization, translation, review of broad-scale landscape assessments, and other projects. An example of contributions includes leading a network of >30 researcher and managers focused on ecology and management of exotic invasive plants in the Bromus genus (includes cheatgrass); the crowning achievement was a book synthesizing the problem.
