Backpack GPS Units Reveal Golden Eagle Movements in Southern Coastal California

To address uncertainty about the status of golden eagles in coastal southern California, the USGS along with local, State, and other Federal agencies began a multiyear golden eagle survey and tracking program. Their objective was to evaluate the effects of human activities on this species by addressing questions about golden eagle habitat use, movement behavior, nest occupancy, and genetic population structure. Golden eagles were captured from October 2014 to March 2015, and fitted with a GPS backpack transmitter that sent data over the mobile phone network, allowing researchers to track their movements. A new data series report presents this biotelemetry data associated with 26 golden eagles tracked from November 22, 2014 through February 23, 2016. The report contains maps showing location data for each eagle. Movements ranged as far north as San Luis Obispo, California, and as far south as La Paz, Baja California, Mexico.
