Pre-Publication Notification: Demographic Consequences of Golden Eagle Fatalities from Renewable Energy Production

A paper entitled “Golden Eagle Fatalities Demonstrate the Continental-Scale Consequences of Local-Scale Renewable Energy Generation” has been accepted for publication in the journal Conservation Biology. Despite the large numbers of wildlife killed at renewable energy facilities, it is not clear if mortalities are demographically sustainable for specific populations. Characterizing the scope of this mortality is central to the successful implementation and management of renewable energy development. To assess the effects of renewable energy production on Golden Eagles, a USGS-led research team used genetic and stable isotope data collected from 67 eagles killed at the Altamont Pass Wind Resource Area in California from 2012-2014. Their goal was to investigate the geographic extent and demographic consequences of renewable energy caused fatalities by examining how eagle immigration and death affect local populations. Their findings may have important relevance to environmental impact assessments that generally consider only local-scale consequences of renewable energy development. A USGS news release is planned to coincide with this publication. Purdue University is also planning on developing a separate news release.
