Searching and Publication Databases
- AGRICOLA
National Agriculture Library's database of 2,000,000 bibliographic records
publications and resources encompassing all aspects of agriculture and
allied disciplines, including plant and animal sciences, forestry, entomology,
soil and water resources, agricultural economics, agricultural engineering,
agricultural products, alternative farming practices, and food and nutrition.
- Birds
of North America (Index)
BIRDS OF NORTH AMERICA (BNA) is a series, currently in progress,
that describes the life history of birds that nest in the United States
and Canada. Each issue number, called a profile, usually describes one

- Duckdata
The primary objective of DUCKDATA is to provide access to the extensive
literature concerning North American waterfowl, including references
emphasizing wetlands but having implications for waterfowl ecology,
conservation, and management.
- E.V. Komarek
Fire Ecology Database,
a project of the Tall Timbers Research Station, is a unique resource
for locating a broad range of fire-related information. Literature on
control of wildfires as well as applications of prescribed burning are
included. Contains over 12,000 citations, many with abstracts.
- Fish and
Wildlife Reference Service
The Fish and Wildlife Reference Service (FWRS) receives, indexes,
stores and distributes copies of reports produced by State fish and
wildlife agencies from research studies supported by Federal Aid in
Sport Fish Restoration Act and Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act
funding. FWRS also receives reports produced by the Anadromous Fish
Conservation Program, the Endangered Species Grant Program, and the
Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Units. Additional collections
located at FWRS include the Lead Shot/Lead Poisoning Clearinghouse,
Boating Access/Boating Facilities Clearinghouse, and the Clean Vessel
Act Education/Information Clearinghouse

(formerly UNCOVER)
UnCover is a database of current article information taken from over
17,000 multidisciplinary journals. ingenta contains brief descriptive
information for over 7,000,000 articles which have appeared since Fall
1988. Requires log in and password.
- Interagency
Taxonomic Information System (ITIS)
The Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS) is a partnership
of U.S., Canadian, and Mexican agencies, other organizations, and taxonomic
specialists cooperating on the development of an on-line, scientifically
credible, list of biological names focusing on the biota of North America.
ITIS is also a participating member of Species 2000, an international
project indexing the world's known species.

Medscape,
requires free registration with ID term and password of your choice. Includes
a medical dictionary
National Library of
Medicine's PubMed server, 10 million records includes Citation
Matcher for Single Articles (enter as much as you know to find
the full citation)
- PLANTS
Database provides a single source of standardized information about
plants. PLANTS provides standardized plant names, symbols and other
plant attribute information.
- Recent
Ornithological Literature Online
The Recent Ornithological Literature (ROL) list is no longer being issued
as a printed supplement to The Auk, The Emu, or The Ibis. Follow this
link to the online resource.
- Search4Science
This vertical search engine is offered by, BD Biosciences, a provider
of products and services for researchers and laboratorians around the
world.
- Scirus
Elsevier Science has developed a Internet search tool, concentrating
on scientific content only and by searching both Web and membership
sources.

FirstSearch-contains 46 databases including:
- ArticleFirst OCLC index of articles from the contents pages
of journals
- BasicBIOSIS is a subset of the Biological Abstracts database.
It covers the most recent five years and approximately 350 journal
titles. (In contrast, the full BIOSIS database indexes more than 5,000
journals and begins in 1969) Ornithology coverage is good, but contaminants
coverage is weak. There are 380,000+ records.
- DISSERTATION ABSTRACTS is available in its entirety, beginning
in 1861 and contains 1.5+ million records.
- WorldCat is the OCLC online union catalog. It covers
many formats of publishing, but most records are for books, series
members or journal titles. Very few journal articles are included.
Georef
1.8 million references to geoscience journal articles, books, maps,
conference papers, reports, and theses. GeoRef covers the geology of
North America from 1785 to the present and the geology of the rest of
the world from 1933 to the present. The database includes references
to all publications of the U.S. Geological Survey. Masters' theses and
doctoral dissertations from U.S. and Canadian universities are also
covered.
ScienceDirect Web Editions
The USGS Library has established a license agreement for ScienceDirect
Web Editions, which provides online access to over 100 titles received
by USGS libraries in all four disciplines. Users may browse journal
issues from a rolling backfile of the last 12 months and access full
text articles in PDF or HTML format. User authentication is based on
IP address.
Scientific American
The USGS Library has arranged for Survey employees nationwide to
have a 30-day free trial of Scientific American Archive Online beginning
October 1, 2001. The database offers full text searching and covers
over 3,000 articles and their accompanying photographs and graphics
in issue published from 1993 to the present.
Electronic Journals
- Conservation Ecology
Articles in Conservation Ecology are published continuously
in an Issue-in-Progress. At semi-annual intervals, the Issue-in-Progress
is declared a New Issue. All articles are copyrighted by the Ecological
Society of America.
