My research largely focuses on feedbacks between plant community dynamics and soil nutrient cycling.  Past work has explored the role of species specific effects on N cycles on the persistence of exotic plants, as well as the ability of native species to re-establish.  At OSU, I am comparing the degree to which N-fixing shrubs are competitors or facilitators of conifers through forest succession.  This is part of a project quantifying N-fixation in the Klamath-Siskiyou Douglas-fir forest zone of southwestern Oregon and northwestern California.  I am especially interested in how the net balance of positive and negative interactions changes along rainfall gradients, as limiting resources may shift between nitrogen and water.

My research examines biogeochemical cycling of nutrients in forests of the Oregon Coast Range. I'm interested in understanding the relationship between soil nutrient status and tree health, especially with regards to calcium, which is often overlooked in this region.  I seek to differentiate soil pools of calcium and their availability for tree uptake and to understand the long-term retention of calcium in the ecosystem. In conjunction, I am investigating mechanisms of natural abundance calcium stable isotope fractionation.
