Study Description

Title:
Factors Contributing to Population Structure and Status of the Northern Spotted Owl over the Past Twenty Years

Status: Active

Synopsis:
Concern over the fate of the Northern Spotted Owl has been a topic of national focus for over 20 years. Recent analyses report significant declines in Northern Spotted Owl populations and genetic diversity. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has requested that the USGS conduct analyses to better understand owl movements across the landscape and how these movement patterns may change over time. In this study, scientists use more than 20 years of information from eight long-term study areas to investigate how various factors influence Northern Spotted Owl dispersal over space and time. Results help managers and decision makers better understand the influence of landscape and Barred Owls on site occupancy of Northern Spotted Owls, and provide an assessment of future population trends.
