Study Description

Title:
International Approach to Metapopulation Viability Analyses for Piping Plovers

Status: Completed

Synopsis:
After more than 10 years of international recovery efforts for the threatened/endangered piping plover, the species continues in a serious decline throughout much of its range. The species is widely distributed across North America, breeding on beaches from Alberta to Newfoundland and south to North Carolina, yet their numbers total less than 5,500. More surprising is that, despite efforts of four recovery teams, prioritization of recovery efforts is still lacking. This need has long been recognized in recovery plans, but the work has never been carried out due to lack of funds. Annual population data have been collected from throughout the species range and an international census was completed in 1991, so there are data available to carry out large-scale analyses. All four recovery teams are now revising their original recovery plans and all call for population viability analyses to be carried out at the metapopulation level. This proposal addresses the need to carry out metapopulation viability analyses for piping plovers throughout their range so that their status may be more precisely assessed and future efforts prioritized.
