Pedigree and Genetic Management Plan for the Captive Breeding of Quino Checkerspot Butterfly
Active
The Quino checkerspot, a medium-sized butterfly, was formerly abundant in coastal scrub habitat in southern California and northern Baja California. In the last 100 years, it has undergone a population decline due to land-use changes and invasive plants and was listed under the Endangered Species Act in 1997. The USGS will provide guidance on approaches for the recovery of the species including assembling and evaluating current information, assessing the captive breeding efforts, determining information needs, and proposing analyses. In addition, genetic techniques will be used to identify captive and wild populations and quantify population diversity.
