Study Description

Title:
Demographic Characteristics of Northern Spotted Owls on the Eugene Bureau of Land Management District, Central Coast Range, Oregon

Status: Completed

Synopsis:
The northern spotted owl is at risk in significant portions of its range as a result of continued destruction and fragmentation of its habitat. For a species like the spotted owl, estimates of demographic parameters are essential to infer the rate and direction of population change. Knowledge of demographic characteristics of spotted owls within this environment is integral to understanding habitat management options for spotted owls in this region. Furthermore, long-term monitoring of spotted owls within this fragmented situation aid in our understanding of the parameters that govern spotted owl populations. Our research provides necessary information for the evaluation of owl population parameters in response to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Resource Management Plan and its effectiveness once implemented. Our objectives for this study are the following: 1) intensively survey all BLM lands and intervening ownerships for spotted owls within the proposed study area; 2) satisfy BLM spotted owl monitoring requirements within the proposed study area; 3) band adult and juvenile spotted owls encountered; 4) confirm presence orabsence of previously marked spotted owls within the study area to assist in determining demographic parameters; 5) determine demographic parameters of spotted owls within the study area to include density, turnover, population age structure, and age specific birth, death and reproductive rates; and 6) prepare and present reports of the results.
