Study Description

Title:
International Snowy Plover Breeding Inventory: Oregon and Texas Implementation

Status: Active

Web Site: http://www.fws.gov/pacific/migratorybirds/snowyplover/

Synopsis:
The Snowy Plover is a species of high conservation concern, yet there has never been a comprehensive survey to assess the distribution and range-wide abundance of this species. USGS FRESC has teamed up with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) Migratory Birds and Habitat Programs to plan and coordinate an inventory of Snowy Plovers in the interior and Gulf coast of North America. Multiple agency partners are assisting with implementation of surveys in different regions and USGS FRESC is in charge of implementing surveys in Oregon and Texas. Results from our surveys will be used to generate an estimate, with confidence intervals, of the Snowy Plover population inhabiting interior Oregon and the Texas coast during the breeding season. This information will then be combined with estimates from other areas to provide a total population estimate to the USFWS which will help the USFWS determine the conservation status of this species and provide a baseline by which to measure population trends.
