Study Description

Title:
Long-term Monitoring of DDE and Other Organochlorine Contaminants in Spring Migrant Peregrine Falcons at Padre Island, Texas, 1978-2004

Status: Completed

Synopsis:
Birds of prey populations declined throughout much of the world following the widespread use of the pesticide DDT, which affected reproductive success. By the time DDT was banned in the United States in 1972, Peregrine Falcon populations were extirpated or diminished in much of their range. A study that began in 1976 examines levels of the toxic pesticides DDT and DDE, a breakdown product of DDT, in blood of an Arctic subspecies of Peregrine Falcons. This study analyzes blood samples collected in 2004, adding to systematic long-term information of contaminants in the Arctic population.
