Study Description

Title:
Spatial and Temporal Assessment of Habitat Needs and Demography of Wilson’s Snipe (Gallinago delicata) in Working Wetland Landscapes of the Willamette Valley, Oregon

Status: Completed

Synopsis:
Wilson’s Snipe (WISN) is a nine inch tall bird that lives year-round in the wetland areas of the Pacific Northwest. Investigation into demographic, habitat, and movement for WISN in Oregon's Willamette Valley provides a unique opportunity to assess snipe needs and wetland structure. Relative estimates of breeding and wintering populations are novel for the species, region, and for the field of avian ecology. USGS scientists are mapping WISN distribution and abundance and identifying seasonal movement patterns in the Willamette Valley. Information collected is incorporated into a research effort to investigate patterns and processes of shorebird and wetland structure. Additionally, sceintists are providing an assessment of state harvest goals for WISN in the Willamette Valley. Results contribute to long-term shorebird monitoring projects in the Valley.
