Study Description

Title:
Coordination of the 2006 International Piping and Snowy Plover Census and Evaluation of Census-based Population Estimates

Status: Completed

Synopsis:
The Piping Plover is a federally threatened and endangered species. The Snowy Plover is a species similar to Piping Plovers with respect to appearance, ecology, and habitat requirements. In 2006, the International Piping and Snowy Plover International Census is being held to assess progress towards target population sizes across the species range. The immense effort of coordinating census methods spans across 32 U.S. states, nine Canadian provinces, French Islands, Mexico, and the Caribbean. The USGS is providing planning assistance for this International Census as well as drafting protocols and conducting pilot studies to assess census-based population estimates.
