Study Description

Title:
Habitat Dynamics and Population Structure of the White-eared Conure (Pyrrhura pfrimeri) in a Fragmented Forest Landscape in Brazil

Status: Active

Synopsis:
The White-eared Conure is a threatened parakeet native to Brazil that occurs in less than 18,000 square kilometers of deciduous forest area. Habitat fragmentation resulting from deforestation and agriculture has become one of the most serious impacts to regional biodiversity. The main objectives of this study are to identify the potential distribution area of the species and to evaluate White-eared Conure habitat. USGS scientists are evaluating species tolerance to different degrees of disturbance and are investigating whether the total population of White-eared Conures is fragmented due to this disturbance. Results from this study contribute to a conservation management model for the species and its habitat.
