Design of a Long-term Program to Evaluate Harvest of Golden Eagles in the Western United States
Active
The Golden Eagle is protected by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) under the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA). In 2008 and 2009, the USFWS is planning for incidental take of Golden Eagles under the MBTA. The goal of this project is to develop a study design to evaluate Golden Eagle harvest proposals for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This study ensures that proposals for an expanded harvest do not pose a threat to Golden Eagle populations. USGS scientists estimate population size, determine the best way to evaluate harvest proposals, and design study methods to monitor model guidelines.
