Rangelands are found on all continents, covering up to 30-50% of the earth’s surface. It is important for land managers to be able to assess the status of rangeland ecosystems in order to know where to focus management efforts. The USGS and other federal agencies have jointly developed a system in which 17 indicators are used to gauge three attributes of rangeland health: soil and site stability, hydrology, and biology. This modified protocol needs a new evaluation of its accuracy and precision. This study uses a series of five training sessions conducted over a two-year period to determine the ability of trainees to rate a site. Results help develop a fast evaluation tool to make an initial determination of the rangeland health status.
