Long-Term Assessments of Prairie Falcons and Golden Eagle Nesting Density and Productivity in the Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area
Active
The Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area (NCA) contains the most significant concentration of nesting raptors, principally Prairie Falcons, in North America and perhaps the World. The number of Prairie Falcon and Golden Eagle pairs has declined significantly within the NCA. While the decline in Golden Eagles has been linked to loss of prey habitat due to fire, the NCA have been unable to identify a specific cause of Prairie Falcon decline. Legislation requires that management be based on research and on a compatibility assessment of authorized uses in the area. USGS scientists are collecting population and nesting data on Prairie Falcons and Golden Eagles within the NCA and comparing them to previously collected data in the 1990s. Results contribute to the long-term trends of Golden Eagle and Prairie Falcon populations within the NCA.
