The Olympic Field Station has worked closely with the NPS staff to develop a strategic plan for monitoring coniferous forest ecosystems in Olympic National Park. The plan summarizes conceptual underpinnings for monitoring National Park ecosystems, ecological context and resource issues of Olympic Park, conceptual models of park ecosystems, and recommends a general framework for monitoring coniferous forest ecosystems in the Park. We derived these recommendations from several workshops and numerous discussions with resource specialists and monitoring scientists from several agencies and universities throughout the country. From these discussions, we settled upon an ecosystem-based monitoring strategy focusing on indicators of ecosystem integrity, resource threats, and ‘special-status’ species. While our report provides specific recommendations for monitoring coniferous forest ecosystems, we also compiled a complete record of all the potential monitoring projects identified in scooping meetings to assist the park in the ongoing process of establishing program-wide priorities.

This strategic plan was generated from a series of workshops hosted and facilitated by the USGS working in close concert with the staff at Olympic National Park. We would like to thank literally hundreds of individuals who have contributed important ideas used in developing the strategic monitoring plan. Olympic National Park staff, particularly, C. Hoffman, R. Hoffman, P. Happe, J. Meyer, S. Brenkman, and S. Fradkin have been helpful during the design phase; including their participation in workshops, reviewing written products, and contributing maps, graphics and written materials for the final report. We are grateful for the support and and guidance of Drs. Norita Chaney, Paul Geissler, and Mike Collopy.
