The USGS Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center is working with the National Park Service to develop an integrated and comprehensive long-term ecological monitoring program for coniferous forest parks in the Pacific Northwest, using Olympic National Park for the initial development and implementation of a 'prototype' monitoring program. Ultimately, we hope that the core monitoring components of this 'prototype' program can be implemented in other parks in the area to form a regional network for monitoring protected areas in the Pacific Northwest. Developing an ecological monitoring program of sufficient scope to meet broad NPS monitoring goals entails a step-wise process of conceptual and strategic planning, followed by selection and field-testing of specific monitoring protocols. Our project includes many facets of this process, including the development of a comprehensive strategic plan to guide the development of the overall monitoring effort as well as several preliminary design or 'pilot' studies to test, evaluate and refine specific monitoring protocols.
The development of the conceptual monitoring plan has been completed, as have several preliminary design studies. The USGS Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center continues to work with the National Park service to further test and develop monitoring protocols.
