What We Do

We identify population structure as a guide for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to define distinct population segments under the Endangered Species Act.

We use genetic markers, stable isotopes, and other emerging techniques to identify and track unique populations of birds throughout their annual cycle.

We identify individuals and perform pedigree analyses for species to be reintroduced to the wild.

We determine appropriate management strategies to restore and maintain healthy levels of genetic diversity in small populations.

We characterize hybridization between spotted and barred owls.

In the future, we hope to move into more detailed and specific molecular analyses such as those being developed with microarray methods.
