Abstract:
This data set is an ArcGIS point shapefile displaying locations of rebar stakes marking transect centers, transect beginning and ending points, and water source locations. Data were gathered using GPS units in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004 and recorded in geographic coordinates referenced to the WGS84 datum.
Purpose:
The locations of rebar installed permanently in Mojave National Preserve were recorded with a differentially corrected GPS unit to facilitate their re-location by future investigators or monitoring teams. The pieces of rebar demarcated endpoints of permanent transects on which vegetation and soil measurements were taken through time. Establishing permanent transects removes confounding associated with sampling different locations in different surveys. The measurements were taken at each of 3 points at each distance of 100 m, 400 m, and 1,600 m. In total, we sampled 110 points at 12 wells ([3 points/distance * 3 distances/well * 12 wells] + 2 extra points). The objective of the sampling was to monitor ecosystem response to removal of non-native ungulates (both domestic cattle, Bos taurus, and free-roaming burros, Equus asinus) from the Monument.

The development of this data set has been plagued with a variety of issues around data collection and processing. Inconsistency of operator experience, a number of GPS instruments, and processing techinques led to doubts about the accuracy of point locations from early surveys - especially when data misalignment was apparent. This data set was developed by examining point locations from six surveys, determining the most consistent sets, and then adjusting other data sets for systematic differences. Field rechecking has verified that the data set is accurate to within a few meters.

GPS measurements were differentially corrected with horizontal precisions values ranging from 0.7 to 19.2 meters. Field verification in May 2004 indicated that revisited locations were accurate to "a few meters".
