The data set contains sighting and survey data for Snowy Plovers in the U.S. states of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa, Colorado, and New Mexico. Winter records from the Mexican states of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Tabasco, and Campeche are also included in the data set.

Purpose:

Data were collected to document the distribution and abundance of Snowy Plovers east of the Rocky Mountains, in the Caribbean and Bahamas.

Methodology_Description:

Snowy Plover sighting records and survey data were requested from numerous individuals, agencies, and non-governmental organizations. Sources of information acquired included published accounts, unpublished field observations, International Shorebird Survey data (Manomet Bird Observatory), Audubon Christmas Bird Count data (<http://www.im.nbs.gov/birds/cbc.html>), and other compilations of sighting records (Skagen 2000; Florida Natural Areas Inventory). Historic records were obtained from published accounts, museum specimens, and from a clearinghouse of avian historic records maintained at the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. Site names were standardized for sites with records from multiple sources. Latitude and longitude were converted to decimal degrees.
