Title: Coast Range Fish Habitat - Fish Data
Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: spreadsheet
Description:
Abstract:
Data are in the form of three Quattro Pro spreadsheets and contain estimates of relative abundance and condition of Coastal Cutthroat trout using snorkel counts and electroshocking. The streams (Elk Creek, Camp Creek, and Racks Creek) drain 3rd-order basins in the Oregon Coast Range.
Purpose:
The objective of this pilot study is to develop a set of sampling protocols that will provide the means for statistical and biological comparison across numerous spatial and temporal scales.

Data were recorded on palmtop computers in the field. Data have been sorted by code for each field to check for typographical errors. Numeric data has been sorted to evaluate extreme values to check for typographical errors Data have been scanned for missing values. Hard copies of the data have been visually inspected for errors in sequential numbering i.e. repeated or omitted values and agreement between the different data files.

Methodology_Description:
Fish were captured by electoshocking in portions of the streams which had been snorkeled. An effort was made to capture at least 120 fish from each stream segment, and to sample fish from throughout the entire length of the segment. Age classes (ages 0, 1, and 2) were estimated from length-frequency information. Fish lengths measured were fork lengths in millimeters. Information on fish `condition' was noted by recording both mortality from electroshocking and fish weight.

Methodology_Identifier:
Methodology_Keyword_Thesaurus: None
Methodology_Keyword: electroshocking
Methodology_Description:
Electrofishing was used to determine relative abundance in portions of the basins where discharge was low enough to preclude snorkeling. Sampling consisted of a single pass which began at the downstream end of the unit progressed in an upstream direction. Blocknets were not used and sampling crews consisted of two people, one operating the electrofisher and the other netting fish. The length of time spent sampling was recorded for each habitat unit. Captured fish were anesthesize in MS-222 (tricaine methanesulfonate) measured to the nearest mm (fork length) and weighed to the nearest 0.1 g. Fish were then placed in a recovery bucket and later released back into the unit from which they were captured.
Methodology_Type: Field

Methodology_Keyword_Thesaurus: None
Methodology_Keyword: snorkel counts
Methodology_Description:
Snorkel Counts: Most units were sampled by a single diver although divers worked in pairs, alternating between diving and recording data every 10 habitat units. We calibrated divers by repeat sampling every tenth habitat unit. The second diver would wait 15 minutes after the end of the first dive, then begin their pass. Divers would enter the water at the downstream end of the unit and slowly move upstream counting fish as they proceeded. At the upstream end of the unit the diver would leave the water and the length of time spent in the water and the number of fish observed in each of three age categories (0, 1, and 2+) were recorded. Prior to diving, some units from each stream segment would be electrofished and length frequency data collected on approximately 120 fish. This data provided divers with approximate size ranges for each of the three age class groups. The intensity of electrofishing in any unit was low during this process and consisted of one quick upstream pass with one person operating the electrofisher and another person netting fish. Electrofishing effort was not recorded. In large habitat units such as beaver dams, two divers were sometimes used. In these situations divers would both start at the downstream end of the unit and each would be responsible for counting fish in a prearranged portion of the unit. Divers would often communicate with each other while sampling to avoid double counting fish.
