Data were recorded on palmtop computers in the field. Data have been sorted by code for each field to check for typographical errors. Habitat data was generally collected by a two person crew; however, Racks Creek had a large number of 1st order fish-bearing tributaries and these were mostly done by a single person. Data were collected using a HP200LX palmtop computer housed in a Entelechy environmental case (model no. EC-100). Stream reach types were based on Montgomery and Buffington (1997). They propose seven reach types; dune ripple, pool riffle, plane bed step pool, cascade, bedrock, and colluvial. We added a beaver dam reach type for a total of eight reach types. We had a minimum reach length of 10 active channel widths and new reaches were always designated at segment breaks even if the reach type remained the same.

Stream segments were delineated when there was a significant tributary junction (i.e. >15% of the mainstem), a major change in channel form, or a hard barrier to fish migration occurred. Channel and valley form was a summation of reach level data and the dominant form from the reaches comprising the segment determined segment values. Stream discharge data was collected at the downstream end of each stream segment except in Racks Creek. Discharge was calculated as in Orth (1983). When water levels or channel morphology permitted, water velocity was measured using a Swoffer model 2100 portable water-current meter. When water depths precluded the use of the Swoffer (< 0.05m) a ping pong ball was used.

When a segment did not contain a habitat unit in which estimates were verified, the correction factors from the segment immediately downstream were used. Channel gradient was assumed to be zero for pools and measured in all other units, to the nearest 0.5 percent, using a clinometer. If a value was missing a mean value for the habitat type in that stream segment was inserted. Gradient was always measured looking downstream. The observer with the clinometer would stand at the water's surface on the upstream unit break. This observer would look downstream at a surveyor's rod which was placed at the downstream unit break and held plum, with the observers eye height clearly marked and the base of the rod at the water's surface. Maximum pool depth and step heights were measured with a fiberglass surveyor's rod. Dominant and subdominant substrate were visually estimated and were classified as either boulder, cobble, sand, silt, or clay (Lane 1947).
