- Title: Bird Response to Thinning
- Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: spreadsheet
- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
The data set includes counts of forest-dwelling, diurnal birds in young (35- to 45-year-old) forests that were unthinned, received moderate thining (to a relative density of 35, or approximately 100 trees per acre), or heavy thinning (to a relative density of 20, or about 80 trees per acre). It includes 7 years worth of data (1994-2000).
- Purpose:
-
The data were collected as part of an experimental study examining the effects of commercial thinning on populations of songbirds.

Data sheets were briefly looked over either in the field or immediately after returning from the field. After entering data, the entered data was checked by hand, line by line, against the data sheets. Summary tables were output to further look for potential errors.

We established 5 point-count stations in each stand. Each station was at least 160 m from all other stations to minimize the chance of double-counting individual birds, 50 m from perennial streams to minimize effects of stream noise on our ability to detect birds, and 100 m from stand boundaries. To increase our ability to detect birds at each station, we adjusted locations based on topography. For example, we placed stations on rather than just below ridges so that birds on either side of the ridge could be detected.
We visited each point 7 times 1 year prior to treatment (1994) and during each of the 5 years immediately subsequent to treatment (1995 to 1999) between 10 May and June 30. Point counts were conducted between 15 minutes before and 4 hours after sunrise. We conducted bird surveys in all stands within a replicate on the same day or on days, and did not re-survey a stand within 2 days of a prior survey. After arrival at the point-count station, observers waited quietly for 2 minutes to minimize influences of disturbance that may have been created while walking to the station. Observers then recorded all birds seen or heard within 80 m of the point-count station during the following 8 min.
