Two stands of four silvicultural treatments (clearcut, patch-cut, two-story, and control) located in three geographic blocks were selected for study; one additional clearcut was included in Spring 2000 (25 stands total). Twenty-two of the stands were randomly selected from blocks in the College of Forestry Integrated Research Project (CFIRP) stands, and three additional stands were selected in the nearby area. The four silvicultural treatments were applied to the CFIRP stands between 1989 and 1991. Clearcuts retained 0.5 green trees/acre; patch-cuts removed one-third of the volume in 1/2-acre circular plots; two-story stands uniformly removed three-quarters of the volume; and control stands did not receive any treatment. Prior to treatment, stands were 90 to 130 years old.
One clearcut and one patch cut within each block were randomly identified to receive 600 ft3/acre of downed wood. The volume of wood to be added is based on Oregon Department of Forestry's structure-based management plan and reflects levels needed to achieve downed wood management objectives for some areas of the MacDonald-Dunn Research Forest. A total of 1,474 ft^3 of downed wood (piece size is approximately 40 ft length and 20 to 26 inches mean diameter) will be added to each stand within 30 m of the trap grid (grid + 30 m buffer = 2.97 acres). Wood is scheduled to be added to the stands between December 2000 and March 2001.
An 8 x 10 trapping grid was established with 10-m spacing between grid points in each stand. A buffer of at least 35 m (generally >50 m) was maintained between the outer set of traps and the edge of the stand, depending on the size and shape of the stand. One large, collapsible Sherman live-trap was placed within 1 m of each trap station (80 Sherman traps per trap grid). In Spring 2000, one additional No. 201 Tomahawk live trap (41cm x 13cm x 13cm) was placed at 20 stations in each grid (20m interval; 20 traps per trap grid). Traps were baited with peanut butter and a commercial mixture of rolled barley, rolled corn, rolled oats, and cane molasses, and were covered for insulation and protection from the rain.
Three trap sessions will be conducted each year, Spring (April and May), Summer (July and August), and Fall (October and November); the first trapping session was conducted in Summer 1999. Each block will be sampled for five consecutive nights. Traps will be checked once a day starting shortly after sunrise. Captured animals will be identified to species, weighed, and individually marked, and the sex, age, and reproductive condition of each animal will be determined.
