Title:
Validation of Songbird Habitat Models - herbaceous and canopy data
Description:
Abstract:
Herbaceous and canopy structure data collected for the testing of songbird-habitat relationship models. These data were collected for each of 50 forest stands located on public and private forest land in the western Cascades of Oregon in the vicinity of Cottage Grove, Oregon, in 1998 and 1999.
Purpose:
These data were collected specifically for testing previously developed habitat-relationship models.

Methodology_Type: Field
Methodology_Description:
The number of transects used for data collection was determined by stand size (acreage) and represented approximately 10 % of the area of the stand. The transects measured 20-m x 200-m and were randomly placed throughout each stand. The azimuth of the transect was also randomly selected. A 30-m (100-ft) line intercept was established at one end of the belt transect. A 5-m2 circular plot was established at each end of the line intercept. Within each plot the percentage of forbs, ferns, moss, grass, litter, and other was determined by ocular estimation. The maximum height (in inches) for herbaceous vegetation within the plot was determined. Canopy height of a tree nearest plot center that is generally representative of the stand was measured with a clinometer to the nearest foot. Canopy closure was determined with a moosehorn. The values determined from the moosehorn ranged between 0 and 25; 0 represent 0 % canopy cover and 25 represents 100 % canopy cover. The number of canopy layers was determined through observation within a 37.2-foot radius of plot center.
